Read directly from the server with tools/list, grouped by what they act on. If a tool disappears, we record the date.

dishes
search_dishes
Search dish names across the dining halls, or within one hall. The match is a case-insensitive substring match on the dish name.
filter
filter_dishes
Filter the dining hall menus by allergen, trait, nutrient density, carbon footprint and calories. exclude_allergens removes dishes that carry any of the listed allergens; require_traits keeps only dishes that carry every listed trait; min_mhealthy is the lowest acceptable nutrient-density tier (3 = Nutrient Dense Medium or better); max_carbon is the highest acceptable carbon footprint; max_calories and max_sodium_mg are numeric caps that exclude dishes without published values. Allergen data is only as good as the site. The menu page flags the allergens the kitchen reported for a dish, but the data does not distinguish "contains" from "may contain", there are no ingredient lists, and it is not safe to treat a missing flag as an absence of the allergen. The site's own guidance is: "Look for the signs posted near each food serving area for a list of menu options with allergens highlighted in red." The "Gluten Free" trait means the dish is made without gluten, not that it is safe for someone with coeliac disease. Dedicated gluten-free pantries exist only at South Quad, East Quad, Mosher-Jordan and Bursley.
hours
get_hours
Get the service periods published for a dining hall on the requested day, together with the hall's regular weekly schedule. Without a hall argument every hall is returned.
item
get_item_nutrition
Get the full nutrition panel of one dish, including the serving size, calories, the fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrate and protein values and the micronutrients. The dish name is matched case-insensitively; an exact match wins, otherwise a unique substring match is used and an ambiguous name is reported rather than guessed.
locations
list_locations
List the ten University of Michigan dining halls with their address, phone, e-mail, map link, the service periods published for the requested day, whether they are serving right now, and whether they have a gluten-free pantry. Cafes, markets, bakeries, grills, prices and meal plans are out of scope.
menu
get_menu
Get the menu of one dining hall: meals, stations and dishes, with each dish's traits (Vegan, Halal, Gluten Free, Nutrient Dense tier, Carbon Footprint tier), allergens and nutrition panel. The date defaults to today; the site publishes menus for today-3 days to today+14 days.
open
find_open_now
Return the dining halls that are serving at the current time, and the ones that are not, with the service periods of today.

UMich Dining — questions

Answers built from our own checks of this server.

What can UMich Dining do?
It exposes 7 tools, read directly from the server on our last check. Among them: filter_dishes, find_open_now, get_hours, get_item_nutrition, get_menu, list_locations and 1 more. The full list with descriptions is on this page — we take it from the server itself via tools/list, not from a README. How MCP servers expose tools in the first place →
Is UMich Dining working right now?
We send a real MCP handshake every 15 minutes. Over the last 24 hours 91 of 91 checks got a reply (100.0%), average response time 574 ms. The bar chart above shows every period we have measured.
How do I connect UMich Dining?
Copy the ready config from this page. We generate it for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Cursor and VS Code, each in the form that client actually reads. It is a remote server, so there is nothing to install — the client connects to the address.
Does UMich Dining need an API key?
No. UMich Dining completed a full MCP handshake with us as an anonymous client and listed its tools without asking for anything. All 7 of them are readable on this page. This is what we observed, not what the docs claim.
How fast is UMich Dining?
It answers our handshake in 574 ms on average, which is faster than 20% of all working MCP servers we measure. That is on the slow side — worth knowing if the tool sits inside an interactive loop. The comparison comes from our own checks across the whole registry, every 15 minutes.
How many people use UMich Dining?
The npm package umich-dining-mcp was installed 346 times in the last week. We show installs rather than GitHub stars on purpose: a star is a bookmark, an install is someone actually running it.
Is UMich Dining open source?
The code is open source: it is published under the MIT licence, written in TypeScript and 1 stars on GitHub. The licence covers the code in the repository, not the hosted service at umich-dining-mcp.duckdns.org, which runs on its operator's own terms.
