How this ranking works

Most catalogues sort by GitHub stars. A star is a bookmark — it costs nothing and never expires. We rank by three things we can verify, and we show the score openly. Every number on this page comes from a check we ran ourselves, and you can see when we ran it.

points — server answers

We send a real MCP handshake to every endpoint every 15 minutes. A server that does not respond cannot be “best” at any install count. Requiring an API key still counts as alive.

points — real installs

Weekly downloads from npm and PyPI, on a logarithmic scale so a single huge package does not flatten the list. Installs mean someone did the work of using it.

points — tools exposed

Read from the server itself via tools/list, not parsed out of a README. If a server stops exposing a tool, we record the date it disappeared.

What is an MCP server?

An MCP server is a program that gives an AI assistant access to tools and data — reading files, querying a database, sending a message. The assistant connects to it over the Model Context Protocol and calls whatever the server exposes. What is the difference between a local and a remote MCP server?

A local server runs on your own machine — you install a package and the client talks to it over stdio. A remote server runs in the vendor's cloud and you just paste a URL, with nothing to install. Of the servers we track, 21 036 expose a remote endpoint, and those are the ones we can actually ping.

How do I know if an MCP server actually works?

You cannot tell from a catalogue listing — most of them copy the registry and never check. We send a real protocol handshake to every endpoint every 15 minutes. As of the last run, 17 027 are answering and 3 299 are listed as active in the official registry while not responding at all.

Why do some servers answer with an error but still count as alive?

A server that replies with 401 or an authorization challenge is running fine — it just wants an API key or an OAuth flow before it will do anything. That is a working server behind a lock, not a dead one, so we mark it separately instead of calling it down.

Where does this data come from?

Server records come from the official MCP registry, refreshed nightly. Liveness, latency and the tool list are ours — we ask each server directly. Install counts come from npm and PyPI, and repository facts from the GitHub API. Every page shows when it was last checked.

How is the ranking calculated?

Forty points for answering, up to forty for real weekly installs on a logarithmic scale, up to twenty for tools exposed. No stars, no editorial picks, and no paid placement. The full formula is on this page.
