How to add a server to Gemini CLI

two levels: this user (~/.gemini) or this project (.gemini in the repository)

User-level file, or the project one if the server should stay with the repository.

A local server is a command; a remote one is url for SSE or httpUrl for streamable HTTP. The two keys are not interchangeable.

Let it authorise

For remote servers the agent discovers the OAuth endpoint itself and opens a browser. Nothing to paste by hand.

Things that trip people up with Gemini CLI

Written from how Gemini CLI reads its config, not from its release notes.

url and httpUrl are different transports

SSE goes under url, streamable HTTP under httpUrl. Putting an address in the wrong key gives a server that never connects and no clear error.

Project config overrides the user one

A server defined in .gemini inside the repository wins for that folder. Handy for keeping work credentials out of your personal setup, confusing when you forget it is there.

OAuth needs a browser

The flow redirects locally, so on a headless machine it will not complete. Service-account impersonation exists for exactly that case.
