Runbook Skill for Claude

Create or update an operational runbook for a recurring task or procedure. Use when documenting a task that on-call or ops needs to run repeatably, turning tribal knowledge into exact step-by-step commands, adding troubleshooting and rollback steps to an existing procedure, or writing escalation paths for when things go wrong.

If Connectors Available

If ~~knowledge base is connected:

  • Search for existing runbooks to update rather than create from scratch
  • Publish the completed runbook to your ops wiki

If ~~ITSM is connected:

  • Link the runbook to related incident types and change requests
  • Auto-populate escalation contacts from on-call schedules

Tips

  • Be painfully specific — "Run the script" is not a step. "Run python sync.py --prod --dry-run from the ops server" is.
  • Include failure modes — What can go wrong at each step and what to do about it.
  • Test the runbook — Have someone unfamiliar with the process follow it. Fix where they get stuck.

Global Commenting
by ComeOnOliver
×1

Write self-documenting code with minimal, evergreen comments that explain complex logic without describing recent changes or temporary fixes. Use this skill when writing code comments, documentation strings, explaining complex algorithms, clarifying business logic, or deciding whether code needs comments. Apply when working with any source code files where comments or documentation might be added, ensuring comments remain relevant, helpful, and focused on explaining why rather than what the code does, while preferring clear code structure and naming over excessive commenting.

Mermaid Diagrams
by langchain-ai
vendor

Embed Mermaid diagrams in generated wiki pages. Use whenever documenting a runtime or request flow, a call sequence, a state machine or lifecycle, a data model or entity relationships, or non-trivial control flow, since these are clearer as a diagram than as prose. Also use when an update run touches a page that already contains a mermaid fence, or a page that contains a text fence a previous run degraded.
