What changed 5

Every tool that appeared, vanished or quietly changed what it asks for. Recorded since 17 August 2026. No other catalogue keeps this.

17 Aug a tool changed version3 times that day
17 Aug a tool description was rewritten find_schools
17 Aug a tool changed the parameters it asks for find_schools
and 2 more, back to 17 August 2026

Nothing serious here today

Today is the operative word: we check SchoolScope every 15 minutes and re-read its code on every release. Watch it and you find out the day that stops being true.

Read directly from the server with tools/list, grouped by what they act on. If a tool disappears, we record the date.

compare
compare_schools
Compare 2-4 public schools side by side: band, Scope Score, exceeded/met split, cohort growth (same students across the grade span, as a 0-100 index centred on the state average), climate. A school with no cohort comparison reports no growth figure rather than a substitute — treat that as missing evidence, not flat growth. Schools are only comparable within the same level (elementary/middle/high are separate rankings). Private schools cannot be compared — they have no state testing data.
district
district_profile
A California district roll-up: average Scope Score and absenteeism across the district plus every scored school ranked by level. Match by district name.
feeder
feeder_path
The K-12 feeder path for a school: which schools students typically arrive from, where they go next, and — for elementary/middle schools — the endpoint high school with its graduation and college-going outcomes. Boundary-based (NCES SABS), shown alongside scores, never inside them.
school
school_profile
The full SchoolScope profile for one school by slug: verdict and archetype, Scope Score with band and percentile per level, CAASPP exceeded/met split, cohort growth (the same students two years apart, in SBAC scale-score points, reported as a 0-100 index centred on the state average), climate (absenteeism, suspension, ELPAC), equity gaps by student group, teacher stability, and — for high schools — graduation, college destinations, UC admissions history, AP courses, and IB programmes. Also answers "is this school improving?" with a year-over-year table of statewide percentile and the underlying rates; the Scope Score is excluded there because it is normalised within each year and is not comparable across them. Current data year 2025.
schools
find_schools
Find California schools four ways, whichever fits the question: free text over school/city/district names (`query`), inside a zip code (`zip`), within a radius of a place or coordinate (`near`), or the top-ranked schools at one level (`level` alone). Returns band, Scope Score, archetype and profile URL for each match. Private schools are flagged and never ranked — they have no state testing data. Supply exactly one of query, zip or near; or none plus a level for a top list. Set `tk: true` to limit any of these searches to schools with active transitional kindergarten (TK) enrollment — a filter that composes with query, zip, near and level, and every result carries a `hasTk` field.
similar
similar_schools
Schools serving a similar student population to a given school — same level, comparable free/reduced-lunch share and enrollment size — with the subject's standing among them. This is the fair comparison: a raw ranking largely reflects who enrolls, so a school's position against demographic peers says far more about the school itself than its statewide rank does. Public schools only.
watchlist
my_watchlist
Return the schools the authenticated user has saved on SchoolScope. Requires the `watchlist:read` OAuth scope.

SchoolScope — questions

Answers built from our own checks of this server.

What can SchoolScope do?
It exposes 7 tools, read directly from the server on our last check. Among them: compare_schools, district_profile, feeder_path, find_schools, my_watchlist, school_profile and 1 more. The full list with descriptions is on this page — we take it from the server itself via tools/list, not from a README. How MCP servers expose tools in the first place →
Is SchoolScope working right now?
We send a real MCP handshake every 15 minutes. Over the last 24 hours 91 of 91 checks got a reply (100.0%), average response time 907 ms. The bar chart above shows every period we have measured.
How do I connect SchoolScope?
Copy the ready config from this page — we generate it for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Cursor and VS Code, each with the file path that client actually reads. It is a remote server, so there is nothing to install — the client connects to the address.
Does SchoolScope need an API key?
No. SchoolScope completed a full MCP handshake with us as an anonymous client and listed its tools without asking for anything. All 7 of them are readable on this page. This is what we observed, not what the docs claim.
How fast is SchoolScope?
It answers our handshake in 907 ms on average, which is faster than 11% of all working MCP servers we measure. That is on the slow side — worth knowing if the tool sits inside an interactive loop. The comparison comes from our own checks across the whole registry, every 15 minutes.
