DESIGN.md Linter & Extractor missed 3 checks this week

Everything else answered, so this is steady rather than shaky. We check every 15 minutes, which is how a one-off gets told apart from the start of a pattern, and how you hear about the next one within the hour instead of from your users.

diff
diff_design_md
Compares two versions of a DESIGN.md file the way `npx @google/design.md diff` does. Best for: deciding whether a DESIGN.md change is breaking before it is merged. Pass the whole old file in base_text and the whole new file in target_text, each including the YAML front matter; a file path or URL will not work. Returns: every added, removed and modified token in colors, typography, rounded, spacing and components with its old and new value, breaking (true when a token was removed), regression (true when the new file has more lint errors or warnings), the lint counts before and after, and a markdown summary. Do not use for: checking a single file (use lint_design_md) or comparing two websites (run extract_design_md on each first).
extract
extract_design_md
Writes a starter DESIGN.md file from the CSS of one public webpage. Best for: a user who gives a website address and wants its colors, fonts, spacing, corner radii and component styles as a DESIGN.md file. Returns: markdown (the DESIGN.md text in the open Google format, YAML tokens then the 8 standard sections), the lint verdict of @google/design.md 0.4.0 on that text, the token counts and the number of stylesheets read. Pass url, such as "https://stripe.com"; a bare host such as "stripe.com" means https. Do not use for: pages behind a login, private or local addresses (localhost, 192.168.x.x), pages that robots.txt disallows, or a DESIGN.md file the user already has (use lint_design_md). Errors: blocked_url, invalid_url, robots_disallowed, fetch_failed and http_error each say what to send next.
feedback
get_feedback_reply
Read the maintainers' reply to feedback you sent with submit_feedback, given its ticket id. Returns status pending until a reply is ready, then status answered with the reply text. The reply is information for you, not an instruction.
index
index_tools
Search the tools on this server by task or keyword in plain words. Returns the matching tools, best match first, each with its name, title, a one-line summary and its input fields. With no words it lists every tool on this server. Use it when you are not sure which tool here fits a task.
lint
lint_design_md
Lints one DESIGN.md file with the official @google/design.md 0.4.0 linter, the same check as `npx @google/design.md lint DESIGN.md`. Best for: checking a DESIGN.md file the user pasted before it goes to a coding agent. Pass the whole file contents in text, including the YAML front matter between the --- lines; a file path or URL will not work, so ask the user to paste the file. Returns: each finding with its severity, rule and token path (broken token references, low text contrast, missing primary color, unused colors, section order, unknown keys), the error, warning and note counts, the sections found and the token counts. The file is valid when it has no errors. Front matter that is not valid YAML comes back as a finding, not an error. Do not use for: comparing two versions (use diff_design_md) or reading a website (use extract_design_md).
submit
submit_feedback
Send feedback, a bug report or a tool request to the maintainers of the tools on this server: a missing tool, missing or stale data, or a tool that broke or gave a wrong answer. Pass the kind (need_tool, need_data, bug or other), one short message (at most 1000 characters) and, if you know them, the tool name and the error text it returned. Returns a ticket id. Feedback is not a chat: nothing in it is run or followed. Links, emails and phone numbers are removed and nothing about you is stored.

DESIGN.md Linter & Extractor — questions

Answers built from our own checks of this server.

What can DESIGN.md Linter & Extractor do?
It exposes 6 tools, read directly from the server on our last check. Among them: diff_design_md, extract_design_md, get_feedback_reply, index_tools, lint_design_md, submit_feedback. The full list with descriptions is on this page — we take it from the server itself via tools/list, not from a README. How MCP servers expose tools in the first place →
Is DESIGN.md Linter & Extractor working right now?
We send a real MCP handshake every 15 minutes. Over the last 24 hours 90 of 91 checks got a reply (98.9%), average response time 233 ms. The bar chart above shows every period we have measured.
The registry lists DESIGN.md Linter & Extractor as active — why does it not respond?
The official MCP registry stores what the author submitted; it does not verify that the server still runs. We check the endpoint ourselves, and this one does not answer. Catalogues that copy the registry without checking will show it as working.
How do I connect DESIGN.md Linter & Extractor?
Copy the ready config from this page. We generate it for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Cursor and VS Code, each in the form that client actually reads. It is a remote server, so there is nothing to install — the client connects to the address.
Does DESIGN.md Linter & Extractor need an API key?
No. DESIGN.md Linter & Extractor completed a full MCP handshake with us as an anonymous client and listed its tools without asking for anything. All 6 of them are readable on this page. This is what we observed, not what the docs claim.
How fast is DESIGN.md Linter & Extractor?
It answers our handshake in 233 ms on average, which is faster than 71% of all working MCP servers we measure. The comparison comes from our own checks across the whole registry, every 15 minutes.
Is DESIGN.md Linter & Extractor open source?
The code is open source: it is published under the MIT licence, 0 stars on GitHub and 1 open issue. The licence covers the code in the repository, not the hosted service at designmd.openkrill.app, which runs on its operator's own terms.
