Capabilities

What this server is able to do. For an MCP server this is often the job itself — a terminal server runs commands because that is what it is for. Listed so you know what you are plugging in, not as an accusation.

Runs an external command packages/mcpcost/src/auth-cli.ts:36
    const child = spawn(cmd, args, { detached: true, stdio: 'ignore' });
Builds a database query by concatenation site/edge/rules.mjs:122, site/src/lib/db.ts:686
    console.log(`${existing ? `update (${existing.description ?? existing.ref ?? existing.id})` : 'add'} ${phase} ${rule.ref}\n  ${rule.expression}\n  ${rule.action}${rule.ratelimit ? ' ' + JSON.stringify(rule.ratelimit) : ''}`);

Is this your server and something here is wrong? Tell us — corrections are free and do not require a plan.

This code can reach further than it looks

We found places where it runs commands, builds paths or queries from values it is given. None of that is a flaw by itself — it becomes one when the code changes, and code changes quietly between releases. We re-read it on every one.

compare
compare_servers
Puts two to five registry servers next to each other from the board's latest daily probe: status, how a client gets in, tool count, token cost (exact in Claude when counted, else the estimate), share of a 200k window and initialize latency, with the cheapest, the most expensive and the spread. Use it to choose between servers that do the same job; use lookup_server for the full record of one server, search_servers to find candidates, and check_server for a URL that is not in the registry. Instant, no connection to the servers. A name the board does not know gets a row with status "unknown" and the comparison goes on. format picks the text layout (JSON, a Markdown table, or CSV to paste into a spreadsheet); the structured content is always JSON.
lookup
lookup_server
Reads the board's latest daily probe of one server in the official MCP registry: status, how a client gets access, the exact Claude token cost of its tool definitions, tool count, latency and the most expensive tools. Instant, no connection to the server. Use it when the server is in the registry; use search_servers when you do not know its name, and check_server to probe a URL that is not in the registry. A name or URL that is not on the board returns isError with a short message.
registry
registry_summary
Aggregates of the latest daily run over the whole official MCP registry: how many servers answer and why the rest do not, token cost percentiles and the exact-to-estimate ratio, how servers authenticate, protocol versions, transports, the heaviest servers and the biggest publishers. Use it for the state of the registry as a whole; use lookup_server or search_servers for one server. No input; the answer is a few kilobytes of JSON.
server
check_server
Connects to an MCP server URL now (initialize and tools/list, 10 s timeout) and reports status, protocol, how a client gets access, tool names and the token cost of the tool definitions: exact in Claude when the counter is available, else an estimate from the schema size. Use it for a URL that is not in the official registry, or to see the state this minute; for a registry server prefer lookup_server, which is instant. Sends no credentials: a server that needs them comes back with status "auth", not an error. A URL that is not https, or a server that does not answer, returns its failure as status and error.
servers
search_servers
Finds servers on the board by words in their name, title, description or host, with optional filters, sorted by exact Claude token cost (highest first) by default. With no query and no filter it ranks the whole board, so page 1 is the most expensive servers in the registry and sort=claude-asc the cheapest. Use it to discover servers or to rank them by cost; use lookup_server once you have a name, compare_servers for a few side by side, registry_summary for the totals. Returns up to 20 servers per page with name, host, status, tool count and tokens. Page numbers go to 20; after that pass the `next` value of the previous answer as `cursor`. Sorting by the estimate, latency, protocol or registry date needs a query or a small status; on a bigger list the answer keeps the token order and says so in `sort`.

mcpcost — questions

Answers built from our own checks of this server.

What can mcpcost do?
It exposes 5 tools, read directly from the server on our last check. Among them: check_server, compare_servers, lookup_server, registry_summary, search_servers. The full list with descriptions is on this page — we take it from the server itself via tools/list, not from a README. How MCP servers expose tools in the first place →
Is mcpcost working right now?
We send a real MCP handshake every 15 minutes. Over the last 24 hours 92 of 92 checks got a reply (100.0%), average response time 295 ms. The bar chart above shows every period we have measured.
How do I connect mcpcost?
Copy the ready config from this page. We generate it for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Cursor and VS Code, each in the form that client actually reads. It is a remote server, so there is nothing to install — the client connects to the address.
Does mcpcost need an API key?
No. mcpcost completed a full MCP handshake with us as an anonymous client and listed its tools without asking for anything. All 5 of them are readable on this page. This is what we observed, not what the docs claim.
How fast is mcpcost?
It answers our handshake in 295 ms on average, which is faster than 56% of all working MCP servers we measure. The comparison comes from our own checks across the whole registry, every 15 minutes.
Is mcpcost open source?
The code is open source: it is published under the MIT licence, written in TypeScript, 2 stars on GitHub and 3 open issues. The licence covers the code in the repository, not the hosted service at mcpcost.ulehla.dev, which runs on its operator's own terms.
