Capabilities

What this server is able to do. For an MCP server this is often the job itself — a terminal server runs commands because that is what it is for. Listed so you know what you are plugging in, not as an accusation.

Executes code built at runtime src/tools.ts:113

This code can reach further than it looks

We found places where it runs commands, builds paths or queries from values it is given. None of that is a flaw by itself — it becomes one when the code changes, and code changes quietly between releases. We re-read it on every one.

Available tools 10

Read directly from the server with tools/list, grouped by what they act on. If a tool disappears, we record the date.

generate
generate_password
Generate random passwords with Node's cryptographically secure generator. Each enabled character set appears at least once and the result is shuffled. Returns one password per line; every call gives new results. An error is returned if all character sets are turned off. Passwords are not stored or logged.
generate_qr_code
Make a static QR code for a link or any text, up to 800 UTF-8 bytes. Returns a 512 px PNG image plus the SVG markup. The data is stored in the code itself, so it never expires and needs no account. Light-on-dark colors are allowed, but some older scanners need dark on light. Errors are returned for empty text, content over 800 bytes, or colors that are not six-digit hex.
generate_uuid
Generate random version 4 UUIDs (RFC 9562) in lowercase 8-4-4-4-12 form, one per line. Every call gives new values.
convert
convert_timestamp
Convert a Unix timestamp or a date to Unix seconds, Unix milliseconds, ISO 8601 (UTC), an HTTP-style UTC string and a readable date in the chosen time zone. Numbers with 13 or more digits are read as milliseconds, shorter ones as seconds. Dates without a time zone are read as UTC. Errors are returned for unreadable dates and unknown time zones.
convert_units
Convert a number between two units of the same category and return a line such as "5 mi = 8.04672 km" (up to 10 significant digits). Units are matched by symbol or name, case-insensitive. Errors are returned for unknown units, units from another category, non-numeric values and temperatures below absolute zero. Months are 1/12 of a 365-day year. Units by category (symbols): length: m, km, mi, ft, in, cm, mm, yd, nmi; weight: kg, g, lb, oz, t, mg, st; temperature: °C, °F, K; volume: L, mL, gal, fl oz, cup, tbsp, m³; speed: km/h, mph, m/s, kn, ft/s; area: m², km², mi², ft², ac, ha; data: B, KB, MB, GB, TB, bit, KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB; time: s, min, h, d, wk, mo, yr, ms.
base64
base64
Encode text (as UTF-8) to Base64, or decode Base64 back to text, and return the result. Decoding accepts standard and URL-safe alphabets and ignores whitespace; invalid Base64 returns an error. Bytes that are not valid UTF-8 are shown as replacement characters. Input up to 100 KB.
count
count_words
Count words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences and paragraphs, and estimate reading time at 238 words per minute. Words are runs of letters or digits in any language; hyphenated words and contractions count once. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines. Input up to 100 KB.
format
format_json
Validate JSON and return it pretty-printed or minified, optionally with object keys sorted A-Z (recursively; array order is kept). Returns the formatted JSON as text. Invalid JSON returns an error naming the problem and its position. Input up to 100 KB.
hash
hash_text
Hash text (encoded as UTF-8) and return a line such as 'sha256: ba78...' with the lowercase hex digest. The same input always gives the same hash. MD5 and SHA-1 are only for checksums, not security; do not use plain hashes to store passwords. Input up to 100 KB.
test
test_regex
Run a JavaScript (ECMAScript) regular expression against text. Returns the match count and, for each match, the matched text, its 0-based index, numbered capture groups and named groups. Returns 'No matches.' when nothing matches. All matches are listed (the g flag is added automatically), up to 200. Invalid patterns or flags return an error explaining why; patterns that run longer than 0.5 seconds are stopped with an error. Text up to 100 KB.

SimplyUtils — questions

Answers built from our own checks of this server.

What can SimplyUtils do?
It exposes 10 tools, read directly from the server on our last check. Among them: base64, convert_timestamp, convert_units, count_words, format_json, generate_password and 4 more. The full list with descriptions is on this page — we take it from the server itself via tools/list, not from a README. How MCP servers expose tools in the first place →
What is SimplyUtils mostly used for?
Its tools cluster around generate and convert. That is what this server is built to work with — the grouping comes from the actual tool names, not from a category we assigned.
Is SimplyUtils working right now?
We send a real MCP handshake every 15 minutes. Over the last 24 hours 92 of 92 checks got a reply (100.0%), average response time 188 ms. The bar chart above shows every period we have measured.
How do I connect SimplyUtils?
Copy the ready config from this page. We generate it for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Cursor and VS Code, each in the form that client actually reads. It is a remote server, so there is nothing to install — the client connects to the address.
Does SimplyUtils need an API key?
No. SimplyUtils completed a full MCP handshake with us as an anonymous client and listed its tools without asking for anything. All 10 of them are readable on this page. This is what we observed, not what the docs claim.
How fast is SimplyUtils?
It answers our handshake in 188 ms on average, which is faster than 74% of all working MCP servers we measure. The comparison comes from our own checks across the whole registry, every 15 minutes.
How many people use SimplyUtils?
The npm package simplyutils-mcp was installed 509 times in the last week. We show installs rather than GitHub stars on purpose: a star is a bookmark, an install is someone actually running it.
Is SimplyUtils open source?
The code is open source: it is published under the MIT licence, written in TypeScript and 0 stars on GitHub. The licence covers the code in the repository, not the hosted service at api.simplyutils.com, which runs on its operator's own terms.
