What the code does

Capabilities

What this server is able to do. For an MCP server this is often the job itself — a terminal server runs commands because that is what it is for. Listed so you know what you are plugging in, not as an accusation.

Executes code built at runtime api/mcp.mjs:51, data/check_theory.mjs:17
  .then((src) => new Function(`${src}\nreturn { figSvg, FIG_TEXT };`)()).catch(() => null);
Builds a file path from a variable data/build_bank.py:306, data/build_level.py:165
    p = os.path.join(BANK, f'{t}.json')
Runs an external command data/check_topic.py:85
    r = subprocess.run(['node', '-e', js, os.path.join(ROOT, 'docs', 'design', 'figures.js')], input=json.dumps(figs), capture_output=True, text=True)
Sends data to a third-party sink api/admin.mjs:157, bot/core.mjs:67
  const res = await fetch(`https://api.telegram.org/bot${TOKEN}/${method}`, { method: 'POST', headers: { 'content-type': 'application/json' }, body: JSON.stringify(params), signal: AbortSignal.timeout(8000) });
Reads files and sends them to the network data/load.mjs:16
  const files = (await readdir(DIR)).filter((f) => f.endsWith('.json')).sort();
Page loads a third-party script miniapp/index.html:29
<script src="https://telegram.org/js/telegram-web-app.js"></script>

This code can reach further than it looks

We found places where it runs commands, builds paths or queries from values it is given. None of that is a flaw by itself — it becomes one when the code changes, and code changes quietly between releases. We re-read it on every one.

Available tools 13

Read directly from the server with tools/list, grouped by what they act on. If a tool disappears, we record the date.

theory
get_theory
A theory article, or one section of it, as text: the rule, the reason, tables and links to the drawings. Study notes close to the syllabus, not official IYT text.
list_theory
The theory articles: one per topic, each in sections. With a level, the sections of its articles; without, which topics of every level have an article. Some topics have no article yet.
search_theory
The sections of the theory articles that have the words (e.g. "scope", "cardinal marks"), with an excerpt of each.
questions
get_questions
Random practice questions of a level, of one topic or difficulty when given, without the answers.
search_questions
Questions whose text, options, rule reference or topic have the words (e.g. "cardinal mark", "MAYDAY"), without the answers.
answer
check_answer
Whether an option of a question is right: the right option, the one-line note that names the rule, and the theory section that explains it.
explain
explain_question
A question with its answer, the note that names the rule and the full text of the theory section that explains it.
figure
get_figure
The drawing of a question or of a theory section as SVG markup.
grade
grade_exam
The marks of a finished mock exam: the score, pass or fail, the result per topic, every mistake with the right answer and its note, and the theory sections to read. A question with option null was not answered and counts as wrong.
levels
list_levels
The levels with a question bank (IYT courses, the Racing Rules of Sailing, the charter check-in): topics, number of questions, mock-exam settings and which topics have a theory article.
practice
practice_section
The questions on what a theory section explains, at random, without the answers.
question
question_of_the_day
Today's question, the same one the Telegram bot @iyt_test_bot sends: one text question per day (UTC), for one level when a level is given, without the answer.
start
start_mock_exam
A mock exam of a level: the exam's number of questions spread evenly over all topics, with the time allowed and the pass mark, without the answers.

IYT Test — questions

Answers built from our own checks of this server.

What can IYT Test do?
It exposes 13 tools, read directly from the server on our last check. Among them: check_answer, explain_question, get_figure, get_questions, get_theory, grade_exam and 7 more. The full list with descriptions is on this page — we take it from the server itself via tools/list, not from a README. How MCP servers expose tools in the first place →
What is IYT Test mostly used for?
Its tools cluster around theory and questions. That is what this server is built to work with — the grouping comes from the actual tool names, not from a category we assigned.
Is IYT Test working right now?
We send a real MCP handshake every 15 minutes. Over the last 24 hours 2 of 91 checks got a reply (2.2%), average response time 655 ms. The bar chart above shows every period we have measured.
The registry lists IYT Test as active — why does it not respond?
The official MCP registry stores what the author submitted; it does not verify that the server still runs. We check the endpoint ourselves, and this one does not answer. Catalogues that copy the registry without checking will show it as working.
How do I connect IYT Test?
Copy the ready config from this page. We generate it for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Cursor and VS Code, each in the form that client actually reads. It is a remote server, so there is nothing to install — the client connects to the address.
Does IYT Test need an API key?
No. IYT Test completed a full MCP handshake with us as an anonymous client and listed its tools without asking for anything. All 13 of them are readable on this page. This is what we observed, not what the docs claim.
How fast is IYT Test?
It answers our handshake in 655 ms on average, which is faster than 15% of all working MCP servers we measure. That is on the slow side — worth knowing if the tool sits inside an interactive loop. The comparison comes from our own checks across the whole registry, every 15 minutes.
Is IYT Test open source?
We cannot say either way: written in JavaScript and 0 stars on GitHub, but we could not determine the licence, and without one the code is not open source by default.
