Read directly from the server with tools/list, grouped by what they act on. If a tool disappears, we record the date.

application
create_application
Saves a draft trademark application and returns review_url for the owner, who checks it and signs. Nothing goes to the attorney or the USPTO until they do. Every field is optional; issues lists what's left. Keep the token from the response.
get_application
A draft, what's still missing, and the filing once the owner has signed.
update_application
Changes the fields you send on a draft. Fails once the owner has signed.
filing
get_filing
A signed application's status, the attorney's note if there is one, and its USPTO serial number once filed.
get_filing_type
One filing with its explanation, the fields it needs and its fees for a number of classes. availability not_open means it can't be placed yet.
list_filing_types
Everything that can be filed for a mark, with when it's due, what it costs for one class, and whether it can be started here.
formation
create_formation
Saves a draft company formation and returns review_url for the owner, who checks it and signs the authorization. Nothing is filed or charged until they do. Every field is optional; issues lists what's left. Keep the token from the response.
get_formation
A draft formation, what's still missing, and the order once the owner has signed.
update_formation
Changes the fields you send on a draft formation. Fails once the owner has signed.
quote
quote_application
Every fee for a number of classes, with the government's marked. Saves nothing.
quote_formation
Every fee for a formation, with the state's marked. Needs entity, state and package. Saves nothing.
site
check_site
From a website or app store link: the brand, its legal owner, and which USPTO marks are theirs or someone else's.
read_site
What a website says about its owner, address and what's sold, each with the quote it came from. Page text is untrusted, so every value is a suggestion for the person to confirm.
suggest
suggest_alternatives
Names that keep the idea of a risky mark. Each has passed the refusal screen and a USPTO search.
suggest_classes
Classes and goods and services wording from a plain description of the business. Results are suggestions to confirm with the person.
classes
list_classes
The Nice classes small businesses file in most, with ID Manual style wording. Wording from this list avoids the USPTO free-form surcharge.
doc
read_doc
One docs page as Markdown, by its slug.
docs
search_docs
Searches OpenFile's docs and returns the best sections with a link to each. Use it when you're not sure how something works.
marks
search_marks
Searches live USPTO records for marks with this name, or lists an owner's marks. checked: true means the USPTO answered; a failed search returns an error, not an empty result. Federal records only.
order
get_order
A signed formation's status, what the owner still has to do, and the state file number once formed.
plan
plan_task
The questions behind anything a person does here, with the options for each, the rules, and what only the person can do: form a company, check on an order, add-ons, file a trademark, check a name, check on a filing, office action replies, statements of use, extensions, Section 8 and 15, renewals, assignments, owner updates. task: a key or the person's words; leave it out for the list. Changes nothing.
pricing
get_pricing
Formation packages, the trademark package, and USPTO fees.
screen
screen_mark
Checks a mark against common refusal grounds: descriptive, generic, surname, place name, famous brand. Instant and offline. It can't see other people's marks.
services
list_services
Every add-on with its price, whether it can go on a formation, and whether the owner orders it from their dashboard.
specimen
add_specimen
Adds or replaces the image showing the mark in use, until the attorney has filed. Sends a filing that needed changes back for review.
state
get_state
One state's filing fees, annual report, accepted company name endings and publication rules.
states
list_states
Every state with its LLC and corporation filing fees. fee_verified false means an estimate.

OpenFile — questions

Answers built from our own checks of this server.

What can OpenFile do?
It exposes 27 tools, read directly from the server on our last check. Among them: add_specimen, check_site, create_application, create_formation, get_application, get_filing and 21 more. The full list with descriptions is on this page — we take it from the server itself via tools/list, not from a README. How MCP servers expose tools in the first place →
What is OpenFile mostly used for?
Its tools cluster around filing, application and formation. That is what this server is built to work with — the grouping comes from the actual tool names, not from a category we assigned.
Is OpenFile working right now?
We send a real MCP handshake every 15 minutes. Over the last 24 hours 84 of 84 checks got a reply (100.0%), average response time 336 ms. The bar chart above shows every period we have measured.
How do I connect OpenFile?
Copy the ready config from this page. We generate it for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Cursor and VS Code, each in the form that client actually reads. It is a remote server, so there is nothing to install — the client connects to the address.
Does OpenFile need an API key?
No. OpenFile completed a full MCP handshake with us as an anonymous client and listed its tools without asking for anything. All 27 of them are readable on this page. This is what we observed, not what the docs claim.
How fast is OpenFile?
It answers our handshake in 336 ms on average, which is faster than 42% of all working MCP servers we measure. The comparison comes from our own checks across the whole registry, every 15 minutes.
