What the code does

We read the source, 1 h ago · tools taken from the live server · rules 995398eba69f

A tool parameter reaches a dangerous call

A value the model can set ends up inside a file or shell call. That is not a flaw by itself — for a terminal server it is the job — but it is where things go wrong when it is not.

A tool parameter reaches a file or shell call langs.code → dg-fastify.js:2738, get_text.suttaId → unused/dg-light.js:2380, get_text.suttaId → unused/dg-light.js:2385 и ещё 6
            try { tree = JSON.parse(fsSync.readFileSync(file, 'utf8')); } catch (e) { tree = null; }
Capabilities

What this server is able to do. For an MCP server this is often the job itself — a terminal server runs commands because that is what it is for. Listed so you know what you are plugging in, not as an accusation.

Builds a file path from a variable convert-patimokkha.js:78, core/search-core.js:212
    const raw = fs.readFileSync(path.join(LEGACY_ROOT, 'assets', 'texts', page.src), 'utf8');
        translationInput.value = beforeCursor + textToInsert + afterCursor;
Runs an external command unused/dg-light.js:192
            require('child_process').execFileSync(process.execPath, [path.join(__dirname, 'build-icons.js')], { stdio: 'inherit' });
    <script async src="https://cse.google.com/cse.js?cx=c184c71e0fe5d4c93"></script>
    document.getElementById('clearHistoryBtn').innerHTML = translations[lang].button;
Reads files and sends them to the network dg-fastify.js:1156
    try { names = fsSync.readdirSync(VINAYA_AUDIO_DIR).filter(n => /^[\w.+-]+\.(pli|ru|en)\.json$/.test(n)).sort(); }

A tool parameter here reaches a dangerous call

That is not a flaw by itself — but it is where things go wrong when it is not the job. We re-read this code on every release. Watch it and you hear from us the day another one appears.

compare
compare_translations
One segment of the canon in the Pali root and every available translation side by side. Use a segment id from search/get_text, e.g. "mn129:21.3". Sujato (en_sujato) is excluded unless named in translators.
search
search
Search the Pali Canon on dhamma.gift by keyword/substring or REGEX (min 3 letters, no semantic search). Patterns like "kata.*dukkha", "vucc.*dukkha", "katha.*dukkha" find the canon's own definitions and expositions of a term. Returns a CENSUS of every matching sutta — id, title, match count, metaphor count, reader link — Pali only, ordered so that suttas that DEFINE the term come first, then ones NAMED after it, then by how often it occurs. Set include_segments for the matched Pali lines, include_translations (+ langs) for translations. 40 suttas by default (25 by occurrence count, plus 15 for suttas named after the term and ones defining it); metadata.totalFiles reports the true count, and limit takes a number or "all".
structure
list_structure
What texts exist. Without arguments: collections (sutta/vinaya/abhidhamma/khuddaka), books by id prefix with sutta counts, and translation languages with translators. With prefix (e.g. "mn", "sn56", "an4"): the suttas under it with titles.
text
get_text
Fetch a sutta by id (e.g. "dn22", "mn1", "sn56.11") — the Pali root text of every segment. Pali only by default; pass langs for translations, translators to name a translator (e.g. ["en_sujato"]). Same data as dhamma.gift/api/text.

Dhamma.Gift — Pāli Canon — questions

Answers built from our own checks of this server.

What can Dhamma.Gift — Pāli Canon do?
It exposes 4 tools, read directly from the server on our last check. Among them: compare_translations, get_text, list_structure, search. The full list with descriptions is on this page — we take it from the server itself via tools/list, not from a README. How MCP servers expose tools in the first place →
Is Dhamma.Gift — Pāli Canon working right now?
We send a real MCP handshake every 15 minutes. Over the last 24 hours 92 of 92 checks got a reply (100.0%), average response time 166 ms. The bar chart above shows every period we have measured.
How do I connect Dhamma.Gift — Pāli Canon?
Copy the ready config from this page. We generate it for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Cursor and VS Code, each in the form that client actually reads. It is a remote server, so there is nothing to install — the client connects to the address.
Does Dhamma.Gift — Pāli Canon need an API key?
No. Dhamma.Gift — Pāli Canon completed a full MCP handshake with us as an anonymous client and listed its tools without asking for anything. All 4 of them are readable on this page. This is what we observed, not what the docs claim.
How fast is Dhamma.Gift — Pāli Canon?
It answers our handshake in 166 ms on average, which is faster than 86% of all working MCP servers we measure. That puts it in the quick quarter of the ecosystem. The comparison comes from our own checks across the whole registry, every 15 minutes.
Is Dhamma.Gift — Pāli Canon open source?
We cannot say either way: written in JavaScript, 1 stars on GitHub and 23 open issues, but we could not determine the licence, and without one the code is not open source by default.
