Nothing serious here today

Today is the operative word: we check Dataset licence facts every 15 minutes and re-read its code on every release. Watch it and you find out the day that stops being true.

Read directly from the server with tools/list, grouped by what they act on. If a tool disappears, we record the date.

dataset
dataset_licence
Retrieve licence facts for one Hugging Face dataset: declared licence, where it was declared, recorded source datasets, detected licence files and a signal. Each licence value comes with an evidence URL linking to the Hub file, API record, file list or Hub page that was checked, with a commit-specific link where available. For datasets in the daily build, facts come from the build by default. Other public datasets are checked live on the Hugging Face Hub. Signal values: permissive = permissive or share-alike licence reported; restrictive = use restrictions reported; conflict = possible licence conflict; unclear = insufficient or unrecognised licence information. These signals do not establish permission to use a dataset. Licence facts reported by the dataset and its declared sources. Not legal advice, and not a grant of permission to use the dataset.
datasets
find_datasets
Search the 5,000 most downloaded Hugging Face datasets in the daily build, returning matches in descending order of download count. Optionally filter by signal, task tag and declared licence ID; all supplied filters must match. Returns up to 50 results; licence_evidence links to the Hub file, API record or file list checked for a declared licence.

Dataset licence facts — questions

Answers built from our own checks of this server.

What can Dataset licence facts do?
It exposes 2 tools, read directly from the server on our last check. Among them: dataset_licence, find_datasets. The full list with descriptions is on this page — we take it from the server itself via tools/list, not from a README. How MCP servers expose tools in the first place →
Is Dataset licence facts working right now?
We send a real MCP handshake every 15 minutes. Over the last 24 hours 91 of 91 checks got a reply (100.0%), average response time 109 ms. The bar chart above shows every period we have measured.
How do I connect Dataset licence facts?
Copy the ready config from this page. We generate it for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Cursor and VS Code, each in the form that client actually reads. It is a remote server, so there is nothing to install — the client connects to the address.
Does Dataset licence facts need an API key?
No. Dataset licence facts completed a full MCP handshake with us as an anonymous client and listed its tools without asking for anything. All 2 of them are readable on this page. This is what we observed, not what the docs claim.
How fast is Dataset licence facts?
It answers our handshake in 109 ms on average, which is faster than 91% of all working MCP servers we measure. That puts it in the quick quarter of the ecosystem. The comparison comes from our own checks across the whole registry, every 15 minutes.
Is Dataset licence facts open source?
We cannot say either way: written in Python and 0 stars on GitHub, but we could not determine the licence, and without one the code is not open source by default.
