Nothing serious here today

Today is the operative word: we check CoinMarketCal every 15 minutes and re-read its code on every release. Watch it and you find out the day that stops being true.

Available tools 7

Read directly from the server with tools/list, grouped by what they act on. If a tool disappears, we record the date.

event
get_event
Returns the full event payload by id. Tier-gated fields follow the caller's plan. A recently removed event returns `410 Gone` with its `id` and `cancelledAt`. An unknown, temporarily unpublished, or out-of-window event returns `404`.
list_event_cancellations
Returns removal records ordered by `cancelledAt`, then `id`. Available to every API V2 tier. Poll regularly and never leave more than 90 days between successful requests, even when webhooks are enabled.
categories
list_categories
Returns every category in the editorial taxonomy with the count of upcoming events per category (tier-windowed). Standard+ only. Query parameters are ignored; the list is not paginated.
coin
get_coin
Returns the full coin payload by slug. 404 when the slug doesn't match any coin (tracked or otherwise).
coins
list_coins
Returns a paginated list of coins ordered by `rank` ascending (top-ranked first). Pass the `tracked` filter only when you need to limit results by editorial coverage.
events
list_events
Returns a paginated list of upcoming and historical events within the date window available to the caller's plan. Default sort is `date asc` (soonest first). The `coins`, `categories`, and date filters compose with `AND`.
usage
get_usage
Returns the authenticated key's monthly usage counters. Does not consume quota beyond the cost of the HTTP call itself. Use this to backoff before hitting 429s or to drive alerts in your integration.

CoinMarketCal — questions

Answers built from our own checks of this server.

What can CoinMarketCal do?
It exposes 7 tools, read directly from the server on our last check. Among them: get_coin, get_event, get_usage, list_categories, list_coins, list_event_cancellations and 1 more. The full list with descriptions is on this page — we take it from the server itself via tools/list, not from a README. How MCP servers expose tools in the first place →
Is CoinMarketCal working right now?
We send a real MCP handshake every 15 minutes. Over the last 24 hours 91 of 91 checks got a reply (100.0%), average response time 215 ms. The bar chart above shows every period we have measured.
How do I connect CoinMarketCal?
Copy the ready config from this page. We generate it for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Cursor and VS Code, each in the form that client actually reads. It is a remote server, so there is nothing to install — the client connects to the address.
Does CoinMarketCal need an API key?
No. CoinMarketCal completed a full MCP handshake with us as an anonymous client and listed its tools without asking for anything. All 7 of them are readable on this page. This is what we observed, not what the docs claim.
How fast is CoinMarketCal?
It answers our handshake in 215 ms on average, which is faster than 67% of all working MCP servers we measure. The comparison comes from our own checks across the whole registry, every 15 minutes.
Is CoinMarketCal open source?
The code is open source: it is published under the MIT licence, written in Shell and 0 stars on GitHub. The licence covers the code in the repository, not the hosted service at coinmarketcal.com, which runs on its operator's own terms.
